The Rest and Be Thankful will be closed for two days due to maintenance work.

The A83, which travels from Tarbert to Campbeltown, is often closed due to frequent landslides and flooding.

But next week, it will be shut for BT to carry out “essential maintenance”.

This includes repairs to “chambers within the live carriageway”.

Works are planned to take place on November 15 and 16 from 4pm to 8am.

Traffic will be diverted onto the Old Military Road.

Road works on the A83 after a landslide have occurred.

In October, the A83 road suffered several closures and convoy systems after heavy rainfall.

A83 has ‘bespoke operational strategy’

Following significant landslides in 2020, a “bespoke operational strategy” has been in place on the A83.

It has been organised by Transport Scotland and road maintenance firm Bear Scotland.

It involves tracking the road’s traffic arrangements, measuring rainwater runoff and assessing hillsides.

To help the team make decisions on how to manage the road, observations on the ground and through CCTV are used every day.

Long-running issues for Rest and Be Thankful

In September, Argyll and Bute Council called for the Scottish Government to take swift action and improve the road.

But fixing the road has been difficult for the Scottish Government.

In 2020, 10-year wait to solve the landslide problem was labelled “inexcusable” by Scottish Conservative MSP Donald Cameron.

However, in August, £25 million in funding was announced for the road by the Scottish Government Transport Minister Jenny Gilruth to “secure a long-term solution”.

She hopes to announce a preferred route option by spring 2023.
