A Lochaber father has travelled by mountain bike from Fort William to Glasgow to raise funds for the hospital which treated his son following a serious accident.

Aiden Henshall was almost three when he fell from the playroom in the loft of his house to the ground floor.

He was knocked unconscious and rushed to the Belford Hospital in Fort William before being transferred to Yorkhill Hospital in Glasgow where he underwent brain scans.

He was unconscious for four days, but following treatment, has now made a full recovery.

His father, 36-year-old Jonny Henshall said: “They kept him sedated and, after four days, he managed to sit up.

“The staff were amazing. We were lucky that we could take our little boy home and I wanted to show my appreciation by raising money.”

Mr Henshall yesterday completed a two-day charity bike ride to thank the hospital for the care it gave Aiden.

Following the West Highland Way and continuing into Glasgow, the 115-mile route mirrored the journey made by Aiden to hospital a year ago.

The donations were still being collected and added up last night, but more than £1,200 had been raised.

Mr Henshall said: “It was good. It was hard work, a struggle in places. It was particularly challenging along Loch Lomondside in some places where I was carrying the bike for two and a half hours and scrambling over rocks.

“When Aiden had his fall, all of the ambulance and hospital staff at Fort William and Glasgow were brilliant. I just wanted to do something to thank them.

“Aiden turns four next week. He has made a full recovery. When he first got out of hospital we really had to watch him to make sure he didn’t hurt himself.

“He was a bit off balance to begin with, but after about five weeks, he wanted to do all the things he would normally be doing.”
