Scottish Liberal Democrat leader Willie Rennie described his party as “a significant force once again” as he campaigned in the Highlands yesterday.
Mr Rennie, accompanied by the party’s candidate for Ross, Skye and Lochaber, Craig Harrow was promoting the party’s Remain and People’s Vote position as the European elections loom.
The politicians stopped at Muir of Ord’s social enterprise Café Artysans to meet staff and hear about the projects being undertaken on behalf of the community by The Muir Hub.
Mr Rennie said the local election results last week and doorstep conversations with voters convinced him that the Liberals have a good chance of winning in Scotland.
He said: “We’re sending a very clear message about stopping Brexit, single-minded and uncluttered by any other arguments.
“Brexit will have a significant impact on the Highlands where there is significant reliance on farming support, on economic development funds and therefore we want to make the case to stay in the European Union, and do it through a People’s Vote.
“The feedback we’re getting at the doors and the elections last week showed we are a significant force once again.”
Mr Harrow, who has also been campaigning in Ullapool and Strathpeffer, said: “Policitians cannot overrule the people, that’s why we need to rely on a public vote once again to get us out of this difficulty.
“We now know a lot more than we knew in 2016.
“Now we’ve seen the deal, we’ve seen the details. It should be put back to the people. Any other option I don’t think would be the right route.”
