Parents welcome news that replacement Ullapool nursery is in the pipeline

Ullapool Primary is to be reconfigured in the summer

Parents at a north school have welcomed progress in relocating pupils from a damp plagued nursery class.

The walls at the portable cabins that make up Ullapool Primary School Nursery have been described as being so damp that it is impossible to stick pupil’s work up because Blu Tack simply peels off.

Parents have been campaigning for several years about the state of the nursery – which is housed in cabins which were built as a temporary measure more than 30 years ago.

Now Highland Council has started the process of providing new accommodation with a contract for a reconfiguration of the existing schoolto move the nursery by August this year.

A spokeswoman said that work on a new dedicated building could begin next year.

Alasdair Macleod, vice-chairman of the school’s parent council and the local Free Church of Scotland minister, said: “The parent council are delighted to see that progress is being made with our goal of securing a new nursery building to replace the dilapidated and damp existing building.

“The plans to relocate the nursery for one year until the new building is in place are fine – provided it is only for one year.

“The internal alterations due for this summer, together with the promise of a new nursery building the following summer, will make a huge difference to the facilities at Ullapool Primary School.

“It is welcome news.”

The council confirmed that nursery pupils are to be relocated in a unit currently used as an art hut, which is to be rebuilt to Care Commission standards.

The council’s £150,000 contract also includes a new staff room to replace the existing room to create a teaching area.

A “sensory room” will be redesigned as a t=pupil toilets and a cloak room along with other variations to the existing layout of the building.

The council said the work is expected to be complete by August 17.

A Highland Council spokeswoman said: “The nursery is moving out of the porta-cabin they are situated in at present and moving to another part of the school.

“The new nursery will not be built until next year.
