The next phase of a £10million programme to replace nine bridges along the scenic A830 Road to the Isles in Lochaber is due to start next week and last six months.

The latest structures to be replaced on the Fort William to Mallaig road are those at Ranochan and Arieniskill, six and nine miles west of Glenfinnan.

Work on Ranochan Bridge is scheduled to begin on Monday, followed by Arieniskill Bridge two weeks later.

The new crossings will provide a wider carriageway, with improved vehicle barriers and safety protection.

Temporary bridges will be installed as a diversion until the works are completed and temporary traffic lights and a reduced speed limit of 30mph will be in place for the safety of road workers and motorists.

Three bridges on the busy trunk road have already been replaced with new structures and two more will be replaced this year.

A further two structures will be replaced over the next few years.

Improvements will also be carried out to the structures at Challium and Dhubh, where parapet replacements will be undertaken.

All the works are being carried out by trunk road maintenance agency Bear Scotland on behalf of Transport Scotland.

Bear explained that the work had to be carried out in the summer because the bridges span environmentally sensitive watercourses.

The agency’s north west unit representative Eddie Ross said: “We’re pleased to move on to the next phase of the bridge replacement programme on the A830, designed to improve road safety along this strategic route.

“As with the previous bridge replacements at Dearg, Utha and Garbh, we urge road users to take care when driving through the traffic management that will be in place at Ranochan and Arieniskill.”

He added that they had taken steps to minimise disruption by creating temporary bridges and hoped road users would be pleased with the new bridges.
