Mother aims to follow in son’s footsteps with election to Moray Council

A Moray mother is aiming to become the third generation of her family to be elected as a councillor.

Theresa Coull, whose son Gary is currently the SNP leader in the chambers, has announced her candidacy to replace him in the Keith and Cullen ward.

The property manager’s mother, Anna, previously served as a councillor in Dufftown and Glenlivet.

Mr Coull has served on the authority for 10 years but is now quitting to pursue a career in teaching.

And last night the departing councillor explained his mother would do a “wonderful job” if elected following May’s vote.

He said: “My mum has been active in many local groups within the area over the years and is a very hard worker.

“I’m very proud that she is putting herself forward to be a councillor and I know that the area will be extremely well represented if she is elected.”

Mrs Coull added: “The Keith and Cullen ward needs to continue to have a strong voice in the council to make sure we get a fair share of things like affordable housing.

“I believe that my real experiences alongside my passion for this area and my desire to help people makes me well-placed to be that strong voice.”

The prospective SNP councillor moved to Keith 40 years ago and brought up her three children in the town.

All three candidates in the Keith and Cullen ward are standing down at the end of this month with council leader Stewart Cree and Ron Shepherd joining Mr Coull in leaving the chambers.

Yesterday the SNP also announced Deskford resident Iain Grieve would be joining Mrs Coull on the ballot to seek election for the same area.

He said: “The undertaking of becoming a councillor is one that carries responsibility and one which I do not take lightly.

“I believe that many no longer feel engaged or included in the work of their local representative and that is something I will work hard to change.”
