A man who “took ill” in the back of a police car had to be rushed to hospital yesterday.

The man, believed to be in his 40s, was arrested in Fochabers but before officers could even leave the village they were forced to pull over to the side of the A96 Aberdeen-Inverness road.

Two ambulances arrived at the roundabout just beyond the Spey Bridge just before 11am.

Paramedics loaded him onto a stretcher before taking him to Elgin’s Dr Gray’s Hospital.

The officers, who had been taking him to the police station in Elgin for question, directed traffic past the ambulances and through the roundabout safely.

Last night, police confirmed the man had been arrested yesterday in Fochabers but that officers had become concerned about his wellbeing soon thereafter.

Sergeant Phil Wu said: “He was in the police car already, and he took ill whilst in there.

“The ambulance was called after he had been brought into custody.”

It is understood that the man was kept in hospital for observation last night.

A spokesman for the Scottish Ambulance Service added: “Two ambulances from Elgin attended the incident and a man in his 40s was taken to Dr Gray’s Hospital.”
