A north-east lifeboat crew is appealing for hardy winter dippers to take part in an annual Boxing Day tradition.
Fraserburgh’s lifeboat crew has been hosting harbour swims at the port for the past nine years to raise much-needed funds to allow them to continue saving lives at sea.
The event asks people from across the north-east to take part in a sponsored crossing of Fraserburgh’s quay side just 24 hours after they have finished tucking into their Christmas dinner.
In previous years, thousands of pounds has been raised for the charity.
Last December’s effort raised £4,856 when 23 plucky swimmers braved the icy waters.
And last night, lifeboat coxswain Victor Sutherland said the charity relied on the goodwill of people to get involved with its fundraising efforts.
“Every penny we take in goes towards saving lives, and we can’t thank the local people enough for the support that they give us,” he said.
“This will be our ninth Boxing Day swim, with the previous ones having raised well over £55,000 for us.
“It would just be great for this swim to see as much support as we can get.”
Fraserburgh’s lifeboat is regularly called upon to help with developing emergencies at sea, or to support search and rescue operations.
Last year, money raised during the Boxing Day swim funded 12 call-outs for the crew.
Mr Sutherland added: “Anyone can get involved by getting in touch with the lifeboat station.”
