Weir: Our careless play can be costly

Elgin City manager Jim Weir has urged his young back line to cut out the mistakes he believes are costing the Black and Whites games in League 2.

City were defeated 3-2 by Stirling Albion last weekend, despite leading 1-0 by half-time.

Weir says defensive errors undid much of his side’s good work and he has called for more focus in today’s trip to Annan Athletic.

Weir said: “We paid the price for a lack of concentration and really poor defending last week.

“That has been a concern since the start of the year. We have lost six games and I don’t think we’ve been beaten by a better side.

“I sometimes have to hold my hands up if we’ve been comfortably beaten by a better side but it’s been hard for me to say that. It’s been self-inflicted.

“We have a fairly young back four. When we get it right we really get it right but when it goes the other way we are really careless.

“We have to make sure we do not give cheap goals away as the goals we lost last week were as poor as I’ve lost in any game.”

Weir wants to see a quick response from his side, with low on confidence having lost it last three games and he added: “We are creating a lot of chances we need to try to convert. We have trained well and we’ve tried to lift the spirits. It’s important to move on and try to put it right.”
