Niall McGinn, Greg Tansey and nine other SPFL stars free to talk to clubs in January

With less than a fortnight left until the January transfer window opens, a number of top players are set to be free to talk to other clubs.

In Scotland, more than 100 Premiership stars will be looking to sort out their future and there are some very big names featured on that list.

Here is our pick of the best…

Niall McGinn

Fans would love to see the Northern Ireland international extend his stay at Pittodrie but some strong performances over the last few seasons could see other clubs sniffing around.

He is believed to have had talks over a new deal and tying him down for another season in the north-east could be as important as any new signing for Derek McInnes.

Mikael Lustig

Lustig has spent four trophy-laden years at Parkhead, winning four league titles, two League Cups and a Scottish Cup.

The right-back is another who is believed to be in talks over a new deal but at just 30, and with January fast approaching, the Swede could well take a punt at a few more years at the top in another league.

Kenny Miller

What do you do with a problem like Kenny Miller? At 36, the veteran striker should in fairness be winding down his Ibrox career but has remained one of the top players at Rangers this season.

With four goals to his name already despite dropping in to a deeper role for Mark Warburton, don’t be surprised to see Miller offered another short-term deal.

Nick Ross

At just 25 and a Scottish Cup winner, attacking midfielder Ross is sure to have no shortage of suitors if he decides his time in Dundee is up.

He has struggled to cement a regular place in Paul Hartley’s side and hasn’t played since October so he could well be on the lookout for a new adventure.

Greg Tansey

The subject of a transfer saga and bitter fallout between Dons boss Derek McInnes and his club Inverness, Tansey remains one of the most gifted players in the Scottish Premiership.

The 28-year-old’s move to the Granite City may have been scuppered last January but with the all-action midfield man free to talk to who he wishes in less than a fortnight, could a call from Pittodrie be on the cards?

Alex Schalk

One of the Staggies’ best performers this season and someone Jim McIntyre will surely be keen to keep at County.

He’s become known as a supersub after his winner at Hampden helped secure McIntyre’s men the League Cup – not to mention his other substitute exploits in the Premiership. Will another club offer him a deal? We’ll need to wait and see.

Ryan Jack

The Dons captain has come in for some flack recently after a string of disappointing results for Aberdeen. He has expressed an interest to try out English football at some point but may fancy another year or two at Pittodrie after recent injury problems.

Will he stay? McInnes will want to keep him, that’s for sure.

Eoghan O’Connell

Another Hoops star who will be free to speak to other clubs about a summer move. The young Irish defender impressed for Celtic in the Champions League qualifiers.

At only 21 years old and with a great awareness and natural physicality to his game, almost any other club in Scotland would love to have him on their side – not to mention a few others further afield.

Sam Nicholson

One of a number of exciting talents at Ian Cathro’s disposal. The Hearts youngster has impressed at Tynecastle but with a new manager and an injury that has kept him out since September, what will the future hold for the 21-year-old?

If Hearts don’t move quickly on a new deal, a number of other teams will he gunning for his services.

Danny Swanson

The 29-year-old is undergoing something of a career renaissance at St Johnstone. He spent several years struggling to make a big impact before moving to McDiarmid Park in February but 12 g0als – many of which have been scorchers – will surely have him on the radar of a number of scouts.

Lionel Ainsworth

Ainsworth has impressed over his four years at Fir Park and knocked back interest from clubs north and south of the border when he signed his last deal with Motherwell.

There will no doubt be interest in the winger again in the New Year.
