McLaren double has Rothes on rise

Rothes leapfrogged Huntly and Deveronvale into 14th place in the Highland League table with a hard-earned victory at Grant Park on Saturday.

A brilliantly taken second-half double from former Dufftown forward James McLaren settled the issue. All Lossie had to celebrate was a goal from the penalty spot by Scott Miller.

Man-of-the-match McLaren said: “It was good to get back to winning ways, scoring goals is what I have done throughout my playing career and I was really pleased to get two more.

“I thought Sean Jennings did really well in the middle of the park for us today, he’s a really good player. I am enjoying the step up from junior football with Dufftown to Rothes in the Highland League. Perhaps, I could have gone to a bigger club but I’m getting a regular game with Rothes and that’s very important to me.”

Lossie top scorer Miller was only fit enough to warm the bench along with his captain, central defender Kevin Flett.

Rothes were without suspended captain Dan Smith and unavailable fellow midfielder Ruari Watt.

In the seventh minute the visitors were dealt a blow when on-loan Forres Mechanics attacker Fraser Forbes went down under a challenge and limped off to be replaced by Ricky Henderson.

There was little to choose between the two sides in the early stages on a perfect pitch.

Lossie forward Shawn Scott was using all his experience to try to create a half chance but he was well policed by veteran Rothes centre half Nathan Sharp.

When Sharp upended Scott three yards outside the box Harry Noble’s well struck free kick came back off the wall and the opportunity was gone.

At the other end a well struck 20-yarder from Henderson was comfortably held by Darren McConnachie at full stretch.

The first half was a bit of a non-event. Rothes had only one shot on target and Lossie had none, so things could only get better after the break

Seven minutes into the second half Rothes shocked the home supporters when they took the lead. Lossie failed to clear their lines and McLaren found the back of the net with a ferocious 12-yard angled drive.

In the 62nd Lossie were back in it, Scott was pulled back in the box by Kelvin Main and referee Dan MacFarlane pointed to the spot. Lossie substitute Miller stepped up and lashed the spot kick into the bottom corner of the net.

Shortly after only a brilliant block with his legs by McConnachie stopped McLaren from restoring the Speysiders’ advantage.

Rothes made it 2-1 in the 77th minute when McLaren evaded a challenge and hit the ball low past McConnachie from 12 yards.

Disappointed Lossie full back Harry Noble said: “I didn’t think we created enough today and we made two mistakes which Rothes punished.

“I think we need to improve all over the park, including my own performance, as we just weren’t good enough today.”
