Edinburgh photographer to exhibit at hospital where he worked as a teenager

A north-east photographer whose work has been displayed at the Saatchi Gallery in London will be exhibiting a new series of portraits at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary.

Laurence Winram’s work Shadow, a series of portraits of women double exposed upon breathtaking images of nature, will be on display 24 hours a day at the hospital’s Small Gallery from July 21 to September 11.

Mr Winram, a former pupil at Aberdeen Grammar School, rarely exhibits his photography as he is usually too busy travelling the world creating it.

However, when approached by ARI to put on the exhibition, his special connection to the hospital put him in right the picture.

Mr Winram said: “My father ran Aberdeen Blind Company for 30 years, so he had me work for them installing Venetian blinds at the hospital.

“While there I really admired the art on the walls of ARI, there are a lot of artists whose work has been displayed there that I admire greatly. It kind of helped me get more into artwork and photography.

“I don’t tend to exhibit anywhere, but I thought this one would definitely be something I would like to do, I felt very motivated.”

Mr Winram, who is currently based in Edinburgh, added: “Artwork is an essential part of the hospital experience.

“A lot of things are going on in your mind when you’re in hospital, it’s a very stressful time, so having something to serve as a distraction or something that will take your mind off the difficult things you’re dealing with is very important.”
