The annual Boxing Day Nippy Dip in Aberdeen made a long-awaited return today – with dozens of participants taking the icy plunge for charity.

After a two-year break due to Covid, brave swimmers couldn’t wait to once again dip their toes – or their whole bodies – into the freezing waters of the North Sea.

The sandy beach was coloured in red and green this morning as hardy souls donned all kinds of festive outfits to spread some Christmas cheer while supporting good causes.

Organised by Aberdeen Lions Club, more than 70 people took part in the popular event, which has been a firm favourite in the city for more than three decades.

Despite the beaming sun giving the false illusion of a warm winter day, daring swimmers had to endure temperatures as low as 2C to support their causes.

Here are the best pictures from today’s Boxing Day Nippy Dip taken by our photographer Chris Sumner.

Friends and families braved the sea together.
Some wore more clothes than others.
It was a superhuman effort from everyone who took part.
Hats and gloves were used to try and stay warm in the sea.
Santa took a dip after a busy Christmas.
It was a beautiful clear, but chilly, Boxing Day morning for the dip.
Matching fancy dress especially for the day.
Dippers shared a laugh in the sea.
People weren’t afraid to splash each other.
After an icy dip, people were running for warmth.
The event has been an annual fixture for 30 years.
It was a frosty morning before the dip.
Dippers waved to people watching from the beach.
The plunge raises money for charities.
Crowds lined up along the Esplanade to watch the dip.
Some participants were cold before they entered the sea.
Special pyjamas did not stay dry for long.
Dippers lined up ready to run into the sea.
And they’re off!
Another excellent Boxing Day dip was complete!
