A man has died following a fire at a flat in Thurso.
Emergency services were alerted to the fire shortly before 7.20am today.
The fire was extinguished by crews from the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service but sadly the body of a man was discovered inside the property.
He is yet to be formally identified but his next of kin are aware.
A joint investigation involving Police Scotland and the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service will take place in due course.
Detective Inspector Scott Macdonald said: “First and foremost, our thoughts are with the man’s family and friends at this time.
“We are in the early stages of establishing the full circumstances of this fire and these enquiries are currently ongoing.”
Rab Middlemiss, local senior officer for the Highlands, said: “The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service was alerted at 7.16am on Thursday, February 7 to reports of a dwelling fire in Thurso.
“Operations Control mobilised three fire engines to Bank Street, where firefighters extinguished the fire.
“Sadly a man was found to have passed away at the scene, and our thoughts are with those affected at this time.
“A joint investigation between SFRS and Police Scotland is now underway.”
