One of Scotland’s oldest councillors has received a BEM in recognition of his work.
Argyll and Bute councillor Donnie MacMillan was presented with the medal on Friday, after being named in the Queen’s New Year Honours list for his services to local government.
Mr MacMillan was elected to Argyll and Bute District Council in 1980 and has remained in post ever since.
He has served on almost 50 committees and agencies, and is extremely well-known in the community, attending numerous local events.
He said: “I am honoured to receive the British Empire Medal. It’s been a privilege to represent the people of Mid Argyll as a councillor. I always wanted to help the community – that’s what it always was about and what it always will be.”
Mr MacMillan thanked family, friends and colleagues for their support and said he was overwhelmed by the number of people who attended to see him receive his medal.
Deputy lord lieutenant Jane McLeod praised Mr MacMillan his long service to the country and Argyll and Bute, which began when he served with the RAF in Japan during the Second World War.
