Dingwall teenager who resisted police arrest on July 19 was ordered to carry out 135 hours of unpaid community work as an alternative to detention.

Ryan Simpson, Buchanan Court, Station Road, also admitted kicking out at one officer at the Accident and Emergency Department of Raigmore Hospital, Inverness.

The 19 year old had been taken there after his arrest in Dingwall because he needed medical attention, fiscal depute David Morton told Inverness Sheriff Court yesterday.

“He struggled violently with officers, shouting and swearing at them.” Mr Morton said.

Defending, Patrick O’Dea said: “He accepts it was appalling behaviour and is deeply ashamed. He had drunk a whole bottle of spirits.”

Sheriff Gordon Fleetwood told Simpson: “These offences richly deserve a custodial sentence but I will deal with them by the alternative.”

A 44 year old self employed plant operator was jailed for four months after admitting his third drink drive related offence in the last 14 years.

Gordon Macleod, Braeface Park, Alness appeared for sentence at Inverness Sheriff Court after admitting driving whilst over four times the legal limit on the A832 Dingwall to Achnasheen road on June 25 this year.

The court heard police had got a tip off that he was driving while drunk.

Defending, Ken Ferguson said: “This was not pre-meditated. Colleagues were to give him a lift but didn’t. There was no local taxi available and no rooms at the pub where he was drinking.

“He took a chance and got caught. With his record, he is aware of the seriousness of his position.” Mr Ferguson added.

Jailing him and banning Macleod from driving for five years, Sheriff Gordon Fleetwood told him: “You took a chance and missed.”

A Dingwall man was told he had “self selected prison” by a Sheriff yesterday who had been told that a community payback order had been breached twice.

Steven Johnstone, of Tulloch Square, had been ordered to carry out 150 hours of unpaid community work but had only done 89 and a half, Sheriff Gordon Fleetwood was told at Inverness Sheriff Court yesterday.

Johnstone had been sentenced for obstructing and hindering police as they tried to arrest one of his friends in Windsor Place, Conon Bridge on August 7, 2014.

The court heard he shouted racial abuse at one English officer as he struggled with officers.

Defending, Roger Webb said: “He regrets becoming involved and should have walked away.”

Johnstone was jailed for 60 days.

Sheriff Fleetwood told him: “You have chosen not to do the order twice, Self selection of prison. 60 days.”
