Residents in a north-east town have launched a petition to try to convince roads chiefs a pedestrian crossing is needed in a street where a young boy was knocked down and killed.
The move follows the death last week of eight-year-old Iain Sturrock who died after being struck by a van in Portsoy.
Thursday’s accident happened in Seafield Street – the main road through the town centre.
Banff and District councillor Ian Gray said that previous attempts to persuade the local authority to instal a crossing had failed because the road did not meet traffic level requirements.
But more than 500 people have now signed-up to the online campaign to make the road safer and it is also being supported by Banff and District councillor Mike Roy.
He said: “There’s a significant clamour to have a pedestrian crossing introduced into Seafield Street.
“Myself and other councillors have been asked to support it which, of course, I wholeheartedly will.
“I’ll be using all the influence I’ve got in order to try and progress that. I’ve been approached by several people asking for support for it and it’s certainly ongoing.”
Cub scout Iain is understood to have been crossing Seafield Street when he was hit by the van.
Tributes, including flowers and toys, have been laid close to the spot where the accident happened.
Portsoy Primary School pupil Iain was described by his parents James and Johanna as a “loving little boy” who lived for his swimming, karate and cub scouts nights.
