A Highland shinty club is hoping to set up a women’s team – more than 120 years after the men’s team was established.
Fort William Shinty Club issued an appeal for females interested in playing for the club and received “an encouraging response”.
It is now holding taster sessions for six weeks with the aim of setting up a team to take part in the Women’s League.
Jim Clark, the club’s junior chairman, said: “We feel the time is right to move the club in this direction and for women to become part of our successful growing club.
“We are aware that there is a growing interest in sport in general and fitness in the Lochaber area and if we can help promote this through shinty then so much the better.
“As a club, we look to develop a team to give women the opportunity to give the sport a try.”
But he stressed that they were not seeking to displace current players from any other club.
Anyone from Primary 7 upwards, who is interested in playing, coaching or being part of a new women’s committee under the umbrella of Fort William Shinty Club, is invited to attend a taster session in the Nevis Centre on Friday at 7pm.
Mr Clark added that anyone with or without any previous experience was welcome and sticks, balls and shinty helmets would be provided.
He said: “The club intends to continue these taster sessions for a six-week period to see if there is genuine interest in forming a female section of our club and hopefully gain entry to the Women’s League.”
