North-east residents encouraged to donate food to help those in self-isolation

North-east villagers have been encouraged to donate items of food to help elderly people in self isolation.

Karen Mutch, who lives in St Fergus, was inspired to help those self-isolating because she was “so fed up with greedy people” clearing supermarket shelves and therefore decided to help elderly people in the village.

Ms Mutch said she knows people in the village who are scared and wanted to do “what she can” to help.

She added: “The nearest supermarkets to St Fergus are probably Asda and Morrisons in Peterhead. They are about ten minutes away, but when you get there, it’s just mad.

“I know Morrisons has been bad, there just hasn’t been a lot of food left on the shelves.”

On Tuesday, she set up a table at the village hall and people donated items such as cereal, toilet roll and tinned foods.

Ms Mutch said: “The people in St Fergus have been so kind and given lots of donations, so there is a lot of compassion and community spirit here. It’s nice seeing people come together.”

She donated items herself and confirmed: “People can either come and collect what they need or items can be dropped off to people. We’re trying to help as many as we can, but we want the food to go to the correct people.”

Residents in St Fergus and the surrounding area can donate more items tomorrow at the village hall from 9.30am to 12.30pm. Volunteers will deliver food parcels to those self-isolating and will leave it on their doorsteps.

Bennie Motors Ltd in St Fergus has also agreed to be a drop-off point for food donations for those who wish to contribute.

People in the village who require prescriptions to be picked up or those who need their dogs walked are also being offered assistance as part of the initiative.
