A north-east woman has been named Leader of the Year in recognition of her commitment to overcoming adversity and inspiring other women into the technology sector.

Sheryl Newman, managing director of Aberdeen-based Appetite for Business, received the national accolade at the Scottish Women in Technology (SWiT) Awards this week.

The result was announced in front of more than 400 guests, including some of the biggest names in tech, at a black-tie event held at the Radisson Blu Hotel in Glasgow.

It brought together women from start-ups, multi-million pound businesses and academia.

Ms Newman – the sole finalist based in the north of Scotland – beat off competition from rivals at Accenture, Amazon, CodeClan, Getronics and JP Morgan to clinch the top category prize. It is the second consecutive year that an Aberdeen businesswoman has received gong following PCL Group chief executive Jeannette Forbes’ win last year.

Ms Newman said: “I love my job and what I do and, as the owner of an SME tech company (subject matter expert) I’m delighted to have been recognised at these flagship awards for the value of what we bring to the table.

“I am passionate about sharing my experiences to help others have the opportunity to thrive and feel truly humbled to continue to play a part in encouraging more gender balance in our sector.”
