Bryan Hay would love to complete his medal collection by helping Fraserburgh win the GPH Builders Merchants Highland League Cup.

The Broch start their cup campaign on Saturday against Inverurie Locos at Bellslea in the first round.

Hay made his Fraserburgh debut in December 2006 and has helped them win the Breedon Highland League, Evening Express Aberdeenshire Cup and Morrison Motors (Turriff) Aberdeenshire Shield.

However, the League Cup has eluded him. The Buchan club’s last success in the competition was in 2006 with current captain Willie West the only survivor from that team.

Since then Hay, who will celebrate his testimonial with a game against St Johnstone next month, has been on the losing side in the final three times.

The 33-year-old – who is also closing in on 500 Broch appearances – said: “The club hasn’t won it in my time so I’d really like to win it.

“We’ve had a couple of near misses losing in finals, but most of us haven’t won it and everyone is eager to try to get their hands on it.

“It’s been a long time since the club won it.

“We were unlucky not to get to the final last year losing on penalties to Brora.

“Saturday is a massive game for us and with the way the league is going the pressures off a bit going into the cups.

“We’ve done quite well winning one cup (Aberdeenshire Cup) and getting to the third round of the Scottish Cup.

“Hopefully we react well and put in a good performance.

“It’s a very tough tie against Inverurie but hopefully we can get through.”

Fraserburgh are unbeaten in 11 games, but lost more ground at the top of the Highland League at the weekend when they drew with Forres.

Hay added: “I can’t really put my finger on anything, (manager) Mark Cowie and (assistant manager) James Duthie have been asking us as well and I don’t think we can pin it down really what the problem is.

“We’re having plenty of possession and chances but we’re not taking them and then at the back we’re giving away poor goals.”
