Seven days won’t make one weak at Peterhead

Peterhead's Greg Fleming.
Peterhead's Greg Fleming.

Peterhead goalkeeper Greg Fleming does not think the next week will define the club’s season.

Starting with a trip to Stirling Albion today, the League 2 leaders play the three other teams in the top four in seven days.

Stenhousemuir will visit Balmoor on Tuesday and Peterhead go to Montrose next weekend.

Peterhead’s lead is a slim one on goal difference and Fleming appreciates the momentum positive results from this triple-header would bring. But he feels it’s too early to settle anything.

He said: “Even if we win all three, or get positive results out of them, there are still six games left after that.

“There’s still Annan and Clyde left, which will be tough games. I don’t think anything will be won or lost over the next week.

“Stirling have done well since January. Getting Darren Barr in defence is a good signing for them and in Peter MacDonald and Darren Smith they’ve got two decent players up front. They can cause teams problems and we need to make sure we’re at our best.”

Second-placed Montrose are also on the road today at basement side Cowdenbeath.

The Peterhead mantra has always been to ignore what Stewart Petrie’s Gable Endies are doing and Fleming has praise for his manager Jim McInally for keeping the Blue Toon in the right mindset.

He added: “He keeps everyone’s feet on the ground and is never too downbeat. There’s still plenty of games to go and he’s always remained positive. At times after games, when the lads have come in not too happy with the results, he’s maintained there’s plenty of points to play for. Even after we draw games, you can tell boys are disappointed because they want to win. It’s very hard to win every game so if you come in disappointed, he’s never too uptight and if we play like we know we can we’ll win more games than we lose.”

Former Gretna, Dunfermline and Ayr goalkeeper Fleming also hopes the worst of the recent bad weather is over after not getting home until 4am after the win over Clyde last weekend.

Fleming said: “It’s just one of the things you have to do. At least I was travelling down after a win.”

Stirling striker MacDonald, meanwhile, reckons his side has hit form at just the right time.

The 37-year-old former St Johnstone, Dundee and Morton forward scored six goals during four wins in February to energise the Binos’ title bid.

Stirling are 10 points behind but have two games in hand.

MacDonald said: “Hopefully we can make a real promotion push in the final phase. We should be safe enough for a play-off place but it would be terrific if we could take the title.”
