Is this the end for Tosh in explosive Shetland cliffhanger?

Shetland Tosh explosion
Does Tosh survive an explosive cliffhanger ending to this week's Shetland?

Shetland viewers were left wondering if Tosh survives a caravan explosion in a shocking cliffhanger ending to tonight’s episode.

The dramatic ending came as DS Alison “Tosh” MacIntosh – played by Alison O’Donnell – was trapped in a deadly blast which has left a question mark over her survival.

Adding to the suspense is the fact that in a recent interview with the P&J about Shetland, Alison was close-lipped about Tosh’s future and whether she would be returning in the next series of the BBC’s hugely popular series.

The shocking explosion that brought tonight’s episode of Shetland to an explosive end.

Tonight’s episode saw the team, led by DI Jimmy Perez (Dougie Henshall), follow clues to missing boy Connor’s “safe place” a caravan in a remote spot.

No clues as to Tosh’s return for next series of Shetland

Thinking she might find Connor or evidence of his whereabouts, Tosh goes into the caravan only to find strange drawings and nautical charts.

She calls Perez to tell him what she’s found – just as she spots a chemical drum with wires and a timer on a countdown.

As she desperately tries to flee the locked caravan, realising it was about to explode, Perez and Sandy (Steven Robertson) can only listen helplessly as the caravan bursts into a ball of flames.

Alison O’Donnell plays Tosh in the hugely-popular BBC series.

Viewers wondering if this is the end of Tosh won’t find many clues in a recent chat she had with the P&J ahead of the latest series of Shetland going to air.

While she spoke of her sadness at the end of a “sublime time” with Henshall – who is leaving at the end of this series – she wasn’t able to talk about filing final scenes with her colleague or whether she would be returning as Tosh when the new series films next year.

‘Who knows what’s around the corner’ says Shetland actor

Asked what she is doing next, Alison said: “I’ve been enjoying taking a bit of time out and focussing on that. My wee girl starts school this year, so this summer is just all about getting her into a nice routine. That’s mostly what I’ve been focussing on.

“But who knows what’s around the corner.”

DI JImmy Perez (Dougie Henshall), DC Sandy Wilson (Steven Robertson) and DS Alison ‘Tosh’ MacIntosh.

Tonight’s dramatic episode is now on iPlayer. Shetland returns next Wednesday August 31 at 9pm on BBC One, iPlayer and BBC Scotland.
