Scotrail has unveiled a new look for Aberdeen railway station as work on an £8 million upgrade finally nears completion.

Fresh plans lodged with Aberdeen City Council reveal how the building could look once the mammoth project is finished.

Bosses want to install illuminated signage saying “Aberdeen Station” on the entrance to the building.

The plans have been lodged more than three years after the council rubber-stamped different blueprints for the building.

The tweaks mean that the rail provider will need to secure separate permission.

Aberdeen station revamp on track to finish soon

Passengers might struggle to remember a time when the station didn’t resemble a construction site.

But Scotrail has now confirmed the renovation should be complete this summer.

A spokesman blamed restrictions on the construction industry as a result of Covid and supply chain issues “due to the pandemic and other global trading challenges” for the hold-up.

It’s now hoped that work in all public areas will be complete by the middle of July, with staff areas finished just weeks later.

‘A jewel in the station’s crown’

Kirsty Devlin, ScotRail head of projects, said: “We are confident customers will appreciate the improvements that have been made to Aberdeen station that will be completed in the next month or so.

“We are particularly proud of the work done on the historic A-listed North Corner Pavilion Building – which is being returned to its former glory and which will remain a jewel in the station’s crown.”

The project, which began almost two years ago, will result in changes to the shops, improvements at the taxi rank, the relocation of the existing ticket office and a new first-class lounge.

The station entrance is being upgraded, better connecting the building to Union Square and the wider city centre.

Aberdeen railway station has been at the heart of the city for 150 years.
