New Subaru is a jack of all trades

You get the choice of three engines. There’s a normally aspirated 148bhp two-litre petrol which is the same unit you’ll find in the XV and doesn’t really show the Forester at its best. It’s a perfectly serviceable flat-four, but it struggles a bit to shift a heavily-laden car. Better fun can be had with the turbocharged two-litre which is in fact a completely different engine, effectively being a blown version of the engine found in the Subaru BRZ and its Toyota GT86 sibling. Then there’s the flat four turbodiesel that at first seems like the best fit in the Forester. That’s until you drive them.
